St John and Henley update – Friday 14 March

With a great week of weather and the large amount of rain we had last Friday, St john is looking stunning. We have had a great few days concentrating on our green speed and cleaning up the bunkers after the damage from the storm last weekend. I can report that green speed is consistent and has been between 9 and 10 feet for the week. We will keep working hard on this and always look for improvement.

Next week will be a short week as we have the public holiday coming up but our focus will be to add some fresh sand in bunkers that are lacking and also eradicate the summer grass out of our putting surfaces. We are working towards our next Pennant event on 25 March and we ask for your patience throughout the coming weeks. If a job looks unfinished, be assured we are working towards our Pennant goals.

I would also like to congratulate the Ladies pennant team for beating Royal Melbourne, Well done Ladies!!

Happy long weekend and happy golfing.

Henley

This week at Henley our focus turned to preparing all surfaces for competition play on Wednesday. All surfaces were cut, and greens cut and rolled on Tuesday. In amongst mowing, we have been rolling at least three times a week and have now seen the green speed increase to nearly 10 on the stimpmeter.

Bunker renovations have been a priority. Working closely with Global Turf, we have provided extra resources that has seen all bunkers ‘shelled out’, and now the capillary concrete has been poured. We will now focus on filling those bunkers with sand next week in the hope to have them in play for next weekend.

We will commence next week with a top dress to the greens. I have noticed that on some holes there is an uneven ball roll. This is from Poa being killed out. I will fertilise with a growth regulator as well as top-dress which will see lateral growth in the hope to have tight-nit greens in the near future.

We also hope to top-dress the weak areas on the fairways. This was due to a failing irrigation system which has now been rectified and you will see improvement over time.

Happy Golfing.
